Football Twitter Page

After our Twitter list of football players we thought we would do page where you can get a quick overview of all the tweets out there related to football. Categorised into sections like footballers, journos, podcasts, bloggers, wags etc we hope you find it useful. Let us know what you think and if you have any suggestions. Other categories to come will be video sites, newspapers, commentators and anything else I can think of on the way. Always open to ideas.

Take a look here:

Footballers wot Tweet – a list of footballer twitter accounts

Having used twitter for quite a while now I thought I would put together a list of all the footballers and ex footballers who I have found that are tweeting.  Some of them are very very debatable…..tis very hard to know how legit some of them are.  Will mention my skepticism where relevant

Mark Bright – Legit fo sure:  http://twitter.com/MarkBrighty

Daniel Sturridge – could be, hasn’t used it in a while: http://twitter.com/Danny_Sturridge

Robert Earhshaw – seems possibly legit, I think the more important question is if it ain’t legit why is someone impersonating old R.Earnshaw of all the possible twitters in the world:  http://twitter.com/robertearnshaw

Landon Donavon – legit, as always America sportsmen catch on to the latest online tools quicker than their UK counterparts, but he hasn’t used it of late: http://twitter.com/Landon_Donovan

James Beattie – probably legit but he hasn’t used it in months: http://twitter.com/JSBeattie

Rory Delap – has some banter with Beattie and Shawcross, defo legit and reasonably regular poster: http://twitter.com/DelapSCFC

Ryan Shawcross -continuing the Stoke link, but hasn’t used it in months: http://twitter.com/RShawcross87

Matthew Etherington- also hasnt used it in months: http://twitter.com/Etherington26

Danny Dichio – Toronto F player and regular on the old tweets: http://twitter.com/DannyDichio

Steven Gerrard – very very debatable, although his mundane comments lead me to believe it is him :-) : http://twitter.com/Steven_Gerrard

Harry Redknapp – not sure if this is real but apparently he’s too busy to do it anymore, a posting he made in the last week – lazy: http://twitter.com/harrysblog .  He even has a blog http://harryredknappsblog.blogspot.com/ but I am just not sure if it really is him.  I hope so as it is on our Tottenham page!   – http://www.footballfilter.com/tottenham-hotspur

Giuseppe Rossi – legit twitter playing at Villa Real: http://twitter.com/GiuRo22

Freddy Adu – the highly rated American star, defo a legit account I reckon: http://twitter.com/FreddyAdu11

Stan Collymore – ex footballer, possible dogger, Talk Sport DJ : http://twitter.com/StanCollymore

Rio Ferdinand – not sure its real, could be: http://twitter.com/RedRio

Wayne Rooney – also not sure if it’s real: http://twitter.com/RealWayneRooney

Daniel Gabbidon:  seems legit to me, been talking about his injury of late: http://twitter.com/TheRealGabbidon

Darren Bent – we all know about his account.  Still very vocal, still dissing the haters.  Big up my man DB: http://twitter.com/DBTheTruth .  In fact he has just challenged boxer Tony Jeffries to a “war”, or rather a race to get 10,000 followers.  Here’s Tony Jeffries account http://twitter.com/Tony_Jeffries .

So that’s our list so far, will add more when I see them.  Feel free to email us at contact@footballfilter.com with further suggestions!

Contributions from the comments and our twitter followers and new ones I have found:

Ryan Giggs – looks legit and he’s quite a regular tweeter too.  http://twitter.com/Ryan_Giggs .  Thanks to vishnurchari for that contribution.

David Beckham – hasn’t posted anything since May, even when Shaq was challenging him to whatever it is Shaq does :-)http://twitter.com/beckham

Jermaine Defoe – scoring well this season and bigging it up on Twitter, could be real: http://twitter.com/JCDefoe

Carlos Tevez – really not sure if this is him, but his midly stunted English phrasing and the Spanish posts suggest it could well be: http://twitter.com/carlitotevez

A selection found by FootballsUp (thanks) that I missed (follow FootballsUp on twitter http://twitter.com/footballsup):

Brad Guzman: American and Villas number two goalie: http://twitter.com/bguzan

Peter Crouch: hasn’t used it since April:  http://twitter.com/OfficialCrouch/

Shay Given – looks like his tweets are taken from his site, but very regular at least: http://twitter.com/Shay_Given

Rohan Ricketts – never heard of him before but he plays for Toronto and he is English: http://twitter.com/rohanricketts

Jozy Altidore – Hull and US player, regular on Twitter: http://twitter.com/JozyAltidore17

More courtesy of Patrycja:

Maurice Edu – Rangers and US player – http://twitter.com/mauriceedu

Carl Robinson – another Toroto FC player – http://twitter.com/CarlRobinson33

Jim Brennan – captain of Toronto FC – http://twitter.com/jimmyBrennan

Dwayne DeRosario – another Toronto FC player! http://twitter.com/DwayneDeRosario

Jonathan DeGuzman – another Torotnto FC player – one of the De Guzman brothers: https://twitter.com/jdeguz

Julian De Guzman – Toronto player: http://twitter.com/JBDEGUZZI

I also spotted Ryan Babel on Twitter this very afternoon – looking G and Kayne esque on the background wallpaper: http://twitter.com/ryanbabel19

Vurnon Anita – Dutch midfielder, plays for Ajax: http://twitter.com/Vurnon

More to come….

FootballFilter version 3.0

Finally it is here. We have released the new version of footballfilter.com. With new team pages and league pages, new functions and features. Take a look at the main site to check it out yourself. We hope you like it and if you have any suggestions or comments we want to hear them. You may also notice that not all team pages are done, but the ones that are not you can simply sign up and let us know you want it done…. and as long people dont go nuts I should imagine we can make them pretty quickly! Anyway have a read of the following if you want to know about the new features, I reckon having a wander about yourself is always better but in case you are interested……

ff-logo-01

At the moment we have for leagues – Premiership, Championship, League One, SPL, MLS, Bundesliga (in German), Swiss Super League (in German) and Serie A (in Italian and English).

As for teams – we have the entire premiership and are working on the championship – Nottingham Forest, Derby are done so far, as are Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Brom as they got relegated while we were working on the database :-) !

Filter the sources

Using the tabs provided you can jump directly to your interested category. Take the homepage for example, at the top you can see we have arranged the categories into tabs, if you click on that tab you will be taken to that row. The tabs are a way of filtering down the news even further, helping you to focus on a certain interest you might have…
filter22

We also provide a time filter, so if you start using the site a lot, which we hope you do, you can filter for the latest stories in the last 1, 2, 3 up to 24 hours.

Time filter

Have a wander about

Or if you want you can simply scroll down the page and wander about.

homepage12

Once you’ve seen a story you like the look of, scroll your mouse over it. A small drop down box will then appear, showing you further info on the story – and depending on the source, you might see the story’s picture too.

Media – Podcasts

As mentioned before, not only do we feed news sources but also videos, pictures and podcasts. Take the podcasts section for example, we have compiled a collection of the best football related podcasts which can be played via the page or, if you want, can be opened in an player in a new window:

podcasts

If you opt to open the podcast in a new window you will be taken to our FootballFilter channel – a page we are currently working on and improving. But the idea of the channel page is to give you a nice interface and way of wandering through the different podcats, photos and also, in the future, videos….this page is in development so watch this space:

footballfilter channel

Media – Pictures and Videos

Similarly with pictures and videos. We feed the best pictures from Flickr and the best videos from Youtube, which you can browse and open via footballfilter. If you like what you see we also link directly to the user/member who uploaded them in the first place. The idea behind footballfilter is to promote the best football related sources out there. There are thousands of people taking photos and making videos, we want to help them get more exposure and also promote the best content on the internet.

Approved – Give us your opinion on the sources

Of course as “source editors” this is all personal opinion and maybe some people won’t agree with us. If that’s the case we have various ways for you to get your opinion across. You can use the “Approved” button beside each source to show if you like the source – (you will need to sign up to approve sources). Not only that but you can also comment on the source, check out the feed so you can add it to your own RSS reader, or just go to the website too:

approve

Our Approved section then gives you an overview of all the top approved sources that all our signed up footballfilter users are liking. Here you can also export our feeds to use for your own reader. But remember each team page and league page has their own approved section – so for example if you check out the approved section for the homepage you can export all the feeds for that page:

Approved tab

As mentioned it is also possible to sign up to footballfilter in order to approve sources. But it also allows you to save stories to read later. The sign up process is very easy and is also a relatively new type of process. We basically allow you to sign up using an existing account you – don’t worry we do not take your password details, just the login name you use. At the moment you can sign up to footballfilter using one of these already existing accounts:

Once you have selected an account (hopefully you use one of these accounts) you will be taken there where you just simply sign in and you are then automatically taken back to footballfilter. From there you just need to do one more thing – sign up to Instapaper to allow you to save and read things later.

Instapaper – save and read articles later

You can also save articles that you like to read later by setting up an Instapaper account. To set up the account is quite easy – you can either do it in your profile section once you have signed up or you can also go to www.instapaper.com and set the account up there. Once its been set up you simply click on the “Read Later” which is beside every link and it will be saved to your instapaper account. You can then download your saved links to your iphone to read later, if you are fancy and have one that is.

Read later

Popular

For each team page, the home page and all the different league pages footballfilter also monitors what are the most popular links being clicked – by day, yesterday and by week. It’s a great way to catch up on what everyone else is reading, and also a nice little guide on what you should read. Click on the “Popular” tab and you will shown the top clicked links, scroll over one of the links and you will see how many times it has been clicked:

popular

Live

Everyone is going Twitter crazy at the moment, and to be fair why not? Its a great source of info and can really help you keep up to date. If you go to our “Live” tab we set up a Twitter search page where you can search what’s being said about key words in the world of football. Depending on the trend and what’s going on, there are default key words already entered by us at FootballFilter which we change as time goes by, but if you want to search for something else simply type in another word into one of the four search fields and watch what the Twitter world has got to say about it:

live

The iPhone Version and Mobile Version

We also provide footballfilter in a format suitable for the iphone, mobile and Blackberry. If you have a mobile or Blackberry simply type www.footballfilter.com/m into your phone and read away. The iphone should work by entering the standard URL. And the look a little like this:

iphone

Simply select the category you want and you will then get the various different articles listed by the provider. Take the Broadsheets section, you will see the five latest article from the Guardian, Independent, Times and Telegraph. Like so:

iphone2

Follow us and Contact Us!

At the bottom of every page you will see links to our profiles on sites such as Twitter, Flickr and Facebook. And if you want to get in touch about submitting a source click on “Submit a Source” or if you want to berate us or (more preferably) shower us with praise click on “Support/Feedback”. You can also email us at contact@footballfilter.com. We are just two guys so please be patient if you don’t hear from us. If you like footballfilter so much that you want to do it for another hobby/genre/interest – get in touch! We would be happy to help.

Pangs of nostalgia or the truth?

Is it me or are football kits getting shitter and shitter? As with many of my posts, I am looking back to days of old – take an old Chelsea kit for example (sorry a certain bias is coming through):

And look at whats coming ….

I don’t like this space age direction – you can make it as sweat free fancy as you want but keep it cool and simple. They look like they are competing in the Running Man.

Same goes for Liverpool , for example, adidas keep churning out the same old stuff these days. The old stuff just seems so much better…

And here’s their away kit (home kit not released yet it seems) – I see very little difference from last season’s..

I think more teams need to follow Arsenal’s suit and look back to old styles for inspiration.

The Wembley Experience.

It was six years in the making and millions of pounds over budget but the new Wembley still cuts in impressive figure on the London skyline.

Last month it hosted its third FA Cup final between Everton and Chelsea. To mark the occasion, and the fact I actually had a ticket, I thought I would give my opinion on the new Wembley Experience.

One thing that hasn’t changed is the drive down to London from the north. My journey began at 7am to factor in any delays on the motorways (it is England after all) and to add the excitement of the day as we got closer to the capital more and more cars were adorned with flags and scarves in the Blue of Everton. Us Toffees had waited a long tome for this so we were going to make the most of it!

On arrival n London the advantage of the new Wembley is the giant arch that pierces the bright blue sky, making it visible for miles around. I have to admit I was sad to see the twin towers go – I thought they could have factored them into the new ground in some way. But I have to admit the arch is quickly becoming as iconic and makes it instantly recognisable from any other ‘modern’ stadium in the world.

The presence of Wembley way – now Olympic way – is still another piece of FA Cup folklore that has remained. The magic walk up towards the ground is part of the tradition of Cup final day and the atmosphere was fantastic and, thankfully, good natured.

Only when you actually reach the ground you realise the size of it –it’s massive. Especially if like me you are used to the rickety wooden stands of Goodison Park. Once inside you are presented with wide open concourses obviously designed to cope with large crowds. I have to admit it was nice not have to queue for anything – they have done their homework in that respect.

But if you wanted anything more than a pint you will probably have to re-mortgage your house, Pie? Six quid, Slice of Pizza? Seven quid. I did get the impression that the FA are desperately trying to claw back as much money as possible after spiralling wildly over budget when building the thing.

A nice touch was the large murals above the food stalls, featuring past cup finals and other major events held at Wembley Stadium, it gave you a reminder that an older historical ground once sat on this site.

A walk out onto to your seat I have to admit will take your breath away. It is huge. Luckily my seat was in the lower tier, though anyone who was sat up in the upper level may have needed binoculars. However wherever you are sat in the stadium you will have a decent view, though I would find some of the seats near the front to be very low and wouldn’t offer a full view of the whole pitch.

Atmosphere wise the high roof does let sound escape into the London sky but given the determination of Blues to make a noise that didn’t appear to be a problem. It was the Chelsea fans who struggled to make a sound, though given their success in recent years an FA Cup final perhaps no longer carries the excitement it once did for them ten years ago. The organisers also did their best to make it an occasion, with the tradition of Abide with me to balls of flame shooting into the air as the players came onto the pitch(as if it wasn’t hot enough already?!).

With the sun beating down the heat did rise quickly inside the stadium; the lack of ventilation is a problem and explains why there have been so many pitch problems since it was re-built.

Another welcome return is the steps up to the Royal box, something we didn’t have at Cardiff. That said it is a strange layout whereby the players disappear out of view for a second when they reach the top of the steps before re-appearing to collect their medals – why didn’t they just design it like the old Wembley?
Unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to hang around and celebrate an Everton win, meaning once I had applauded both teams I had to make my way out. Despite the large number of people leaving the organisation on Wembley way was first class, holding people in sections until the tube station was cleared. Once again research in crowd control has been done and well executed. Result aside it was a great day. I know it has had it’s detractors but I think the new Wembley is a great stadium. People will say it doesn’t have the atmosphere of the old ground but no modern stadium has, it is they way they have to be nowadays. Given time the stadium will build up a history and tradition of its own.

My only gripe would be the price of food and drink, surely paying upwards of £50 is enough? But apart from that, the new home of football gets the thumbs up from me.

Gazza you have killed me, you have killed me

Mooching through my CD collection today (remember CDs everyone?) I discovered an inspired musical purchase that cut me deep, harked me back to the beautiful 90s, to David Lee Benson, Roller Discos, Kickers, Biker Grove, Mighty White, Swing Tennis, air rifles, Pro Set, Euro 96 and Gazza dicking on Scotland  - I am talking about “Gazza and Friends” – the ultimate in cash in Football records, released on BMG, look at his fresh little face:

Football, alchy, friend to Jimmy Five Bellies

Football, alchy, friend to Jimmy Five Bellies

But look at the poor sod now, he’s what I envisaged Jakob from Lost to look like until he showed up in the last couple of episodes, or a future bond villain:

Some say Jimmy Five Bellies is the reason he went astray (check out this link I found on the lad for a little extra info: Jimmy Five Bellies) but he’s just like a lot of footballing geniuses, they are fucking mental: Maradona, George Best spring to mind and of late Ronaldinho has gone the same way. Of course there are plenty of legends that haven’t been led astray but were they as interesting?

So what is Paul up to these days? Well we all know he went nuts and got sectioned but the latest is he apparently appeared on both Loose Women and MOTD 2 looking healthy, considering he apparently “died three times in rehab” I have to say good on him. Anyone remember him sweating his way through a pundit spot during the world cup? The word hellish springs to mind….if only I could find it, please send me a link if you can find it.

Anyway, here’s that free kick what he done:

Read Gazza’s book if you ever get the chance, its proper good.

Flickr Favourite

Just wanted to make a passing comment about a guy on Flickr who I have mentioned before who goes by the name of Toksuede.  As far as football photography goes there’s a lot of good stuff out there and the newspapers deliver pretty high standard stuff on a daily basis, but I have to say that Toksuede’s photos are some of my favourites.

Why?  Because he has his own style.  He focusses on certain elements of players or of certain events (e.g Drogba professing his innocence, or Robben bombing it down the wing) which I think is lacking in this middle of the road football media industry.  I have spoken to him briefly via Flickr but couldn’t tell you if he makes a living out of his work – if he doesn’t give him a bloody job.

Anway, heres a link to Toksuede’s Flickr Photostream

Football Filtered #5

Hello and welcome to my latest look at what has been passing through Football Filter this week.

The release of ‘The Damned United’ in UK cinemas this week brought back into the focus the life and times of Brian Clough. The legendary manager, the subject of a TV documentary in midweek, also featured in several newspaper articles, recalling his, er, unique brand of man-management. This article in the INDEPENDANT  looked at some the rules he enforced on his players back in 1968. One of which was that no player “was allowed to order sports gear or goods of any kind for himself without his permission of the Trainer”. Nicklas Bendtner would have been quaking in his lime green boots.

With an England match this weekend David Beckham was the focus of an article in THE GUARDIAN. The former Three Lions skipper, being the true pro he is, insists he is focused on helping England to the World Cup rather than the possibility of breaking Bobby Moore’s caps record on Saturday.

Meanwhile his England team-mate, Steven Gerrard, has been tipped for the PFA player of the year award by his club boss Rafa Benitez. The midfielder has almost single-handedly dragged Liverpool back into the title race with four goals in his last two league games. But Spaniard Benitez told THE STAR that his captain can get even better in years to come.  He can start be re-creating his club form for England. How about eh Steve?

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is known for being outspoken, but his outburst this week was surprising even for him. Fresh from controversially re-naming Wigan’s ground the DW Stadium; Whelan launched a stinging attack on fellow chairman, and sportswear store rival, Mike Ashley. “Mike Ashley has no class whatsoever. I think he has got what he deserves at Newcastle,” was one of the phrases muttered by Whelan, the consequences of which have been discussed over at WHEN SATURDAY COMES.

From one Ferguson to another. Sir Alex’s son Darren believes his father will finally leave the post he was held so illustriously over the past twenty years next season –if United overtake Liverpool’s records of 18 league titles. Ferguson junior, himself a manager at Peterborough, told THE GUARDIAN he thinks his father will want to go out on as bigger high as possible, and it won’t get higher than replacing their Merseyside rivals as the most successful domestic club.

And finally…..

April is always a time for sombre reflection for Liverpool fans. No more so than this year when we reach the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy. To commemorate the occasion, and raise money for the Hillsborough Families Support Group, artists including Peter Hooton of The Farm and John Power of the La’s joined with former Reds players to records a charity single ‘The Fields of Anfield Road’. The video can be seen at  101GREATGOALS.COM  and can be downloaded from April 6th.
